Advantages of membrane structures

The architectural membrane is light in weight, strong in tension and durable material. One of the most important characteristics is “light translucency”.  Such translated light will provide soft and natural environment inside the building by defusing the sun light through the membrane and eliminating shadows of objects below the roof.  Such unique characteristic is quite different from other conventional construction materials.  Now, the membrane structures are widely used to sporting facilities, commercial buildings, landscape projects and other applications.  The major characteristics of membrane structures are listed as follows:

Light Translucency

The translated sunlight is modified into soft uniform light providing comfortable natural environment.  The light translucency is about 13%. (The artificial lighting is not required during the daytime saving the cost of electricity, and special light effect can be featured in the evening expressing the membrane structure with colorful lighting design)

Durability

The architectural membrane can resist against harsh weather condition as a permanent or semi-permanent building material. (The durability is depending upon the material, over 35 years for PTFE coated fiberglass and 10 to 15 years for PVC coated polyester with PVDF or TiO2 surface finish)

Non-combustibility
 (inflammability)

PTFE coated fiber glass conforms to the non-combustible testing qualifications in all countries being suitable for roofing applications.  PVC coated polyester only conforms to inflammable qualifications with restrictions on application as roofing material.

Design Freedom

Membrane structure should allow free –form design meeting unique space design requirements.  Such forms are three-dimensional shape consisting of variety of curvatures.

Self-Cleaning Property
 (Anti-Dirtiness Property)

(1)  PTFE coating: The surface has non-adhesive characteristics not attracting dusts to collect on the surface.   Most particles on the membrane can be naturally washed out by the rain.
(2)  TiO2 topcoat: It has superior characteristics on oil decomposition.  Dirt particles are automatically decomposed by chemical reaction induced by sunlight and rain.

Constructability(Short Period)

Membrane structure installation is different from conventional construction materials.  The construction period at site is very short. Total construction period for medium size gymnasium is about 6 months.  (As the material has been pre-fabricated in final shape at factory, erection at site is assembling only.)

Economy

The membrane structure is light weight system with larger span than conventional roofing material.  Total structural steel weight and foundation sized could be reduced with membrane structure.
